With a tropical climate that insists on a relaxed outdoor lifestyle, Darwin enjoys warm weather all year round. Located on a peninsula lapped by sea on three sides, this city is an excellent base to explore the natural attractions of the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks, the Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land.

Founded as Australia’s most northerly harbour port in 1869, its population rapidly expanded after the discovery of gold at nearby Pine Creek in 1871. World War II put Darwin on the map as a major allied military base for troops fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. Evidence of Darwin’s war history has been preserved in many sites around the area, and its colourful history has created a cultural diversity that is quite amazing. More than 50 nationalities make up its 100,000 strong population which includes the traditional landowners – the Larrakia Aboriginal people.

Travellers benefit from the cultural mixture through a myriad of culinary delights and experiences. Most activities, venues and offerings are outdoors and with such a great climate everything is best enjoyed at the weekly markets, festivals, restaurants and other events held outdoors in parks, reserves, by the beach and even on boats in the harbour. Even the movies are shown at the Deckchair Cinema from April to November.

Open-air markets are held across the city every weekend in places such as Parap, Rapid Creek, Nightcliff, and Palmerston. Further out of Darwin in Coolalinga, and a must, if holidaying in Darwin between the months of May and October is a visit to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets.

Darwin`s Pride Festival and the other calendar of annual cultural events and festivals also make the most of the weather with the majority held between May and September as the Territory sun shines whilst southern Australia rugs up for winter.

There are loads of scenic areas and open spaces in which to exercise and a network of bicycle paths and walking tracks follow the city`s coastline through mangroves, monsoon forests and beaches.
