GAY MELBOURNE
Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city, after Sydney. It has a bubbly gay scene and the locals are gay friendly. Some call the city the cultural capital of Australia and Melbournians have what some might consider contradictory tastes: football (the Australian version) and ballet, barbies (BBQ’s) and fine dining restaurants, the didgeridoo and jazz, street performers and modern theater. While the north of Australia gets most of the tourism, Melbourne keeps a lower profile and is considered one of Australia’s best-kept year round secrets.
Melbourne has great choices when it comes to gay and gay friendly hotels, clubs, saunas and traditional bed and breakfast accommodations. Rates and amenities offered range from budget to deluxe for the gay and lesbian traveler depending on spend and tastes. On http://www.gaytraveller.com.au you will find plenty of choice.
Spring and fall seasons are particularly wonderful. Remember that the seasons occur just the opposite way to the northern hemisphere, for example summer in New York or Amsterdam means winter in Australia. Melbourne’s many gardens are in full bloom and the annual Spring Racing Carnival heralds in the summer. In the fall, Melbourne takes on a different look and although the air is cooler, the amber and ochre parks are stunning. Each year the “Midsumma Gay and Lesbian Festival” is held in January and February. It features art events, a street parade and a ball.
Melbourne's climate has an unfortunate reputation, wet and windy, too hot or too cold, unpredictable and liable to extremes. In reality, average winter temperatures range between 43 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit (6 and 13 Celsius) and summer temperatures rarely raises above 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius). As for their ‘notorious’ rainfall, Melbourne gets only half the average rainfall of Sydney and Brisbane.
Definitely worth a visit is St. Kilda, located on a beautiful headland just a short distance from the city. Once it was the most fashionable suburb, but it fell into notoriety decades ago because it became a haunt for druggies and prostitutes. All that has changed. Because of its picturesque bayside setting, close proximity to the city, beaches, music venues, restaurants and cafe lifestyle, St. Kilda has regained its earlier reputation and become a premier tourist destination. Try the St. Kilda Luna Park, including a one of a kind heritage-listed roller coaster. Acland Street is also well worth visiting. It has become a magnet for world travelers, from all lifestyles, bringing a richness, a vibrancy and an energy to this part of Melbourne.
Melbourne Museum, the airy, clinical confection of steel and glass, is big on multimedia displays and flashy interaction. And then there are the Royal Botanic Gardens and Royal Melbourne Zoo. Another interesting place is the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, one of the city's greatest pieces of modern architecture.
Chapel Street in South Yarra is reputedly Melbourne’s most fashionable and ‘foodie’ street. If you’re in search of designer labels, fancy bistros, street cafés, art galleries and trendy boutiques, this is the street for you.
Perhaps the area that truly represents the soul of Melbourne, is Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. Here you can be bohemian, poor, rich, alternative, trendy, gay, straight, young or old, whatever. It has the best selection of small, unpretentious cafes serving tasty food, organic vegetable shops and flower stalls on the footpath, alternative bookshops and Nepalese wares. People watching is the favored pastime and you’ll never get bored.
