GAY NIGHTLIFE

Much of Australia’s gay nightlife is confined to the larger cities, like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

SYDNEY

Home of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and sister city to San Francisco, Sydney is usually considered to be the centre of gay life in Australia, but I am sure those from some of the other cities, particularly Melbourne, would disagree!

Gay venues in Sydney include hotels/guest houses, bars and pubs, discos, restaurants, saunas and other sex venues.

The main concentration of gay places in Sydney is in the fashionable and trendy Oxford Street area, with the Newtown area a close second, with a scattering of venues in other areas.

MELBOURNE

Life's a party, or at least it should be, and Melbourne's gay and lesbian community certainly know how to enjoy it. Melbourne's hippest nightlife is dispersed throughout its labyrinth of laneways. Spaces that originally housed fabric companies, warehouses and retail outlets, now pulsate with hip tunes and smart cocktails. Some of the key avenues to keep in mind are Flinders Lane and Little Collins Street, each with an array of hidden bars to discover.

Alternatively try the gay and lesbian party scene. North of the CBD, laidback, bohemian alternatives are what it's about, from pubs with live music to dance bars and leather clubs. The gay and lesbian scene is largely found in Collingwood and Abbotsford, and other inner city suburbs which many in the GLBT community choose to call home. To the south, it's all about designer fashion and seaside frolics. There are just as many nightlife options to choose from, but you may have to dress up a little more. Commercial Road in Prahran is Melbourne's main gay strip, with gay bars in abundance, while St Kilda boasts nightlife with an ocean view.

BRISBANE

Brisbane is only a small city, but it has a surprisingly active gay scene. The two main concentrations of gay places in Brisbane are in Fortitude Valley and Spring Hill, both both of which border on the edge of the city, but there are a few venues in suburbia as well.

PERTH

Gay venues in Perth Western Australia include hotels/guest houses, some discos, and saunas and sex venues. Most of the venues in Perth are centered around the Northbridge area.

ADELAIDE

Adelaide in South Australia is a lively city with a stunning selection of restaurants and cafes and nightlife, but only a reasonably small formal gay scene - but a variety of social groups and informal chances to socialise gay-ly! You can find a Hotel in Adelaide for a reasonable price and enjoy the entertainments of this beautiful city.
